Oakington Centralised Event - September 29th 2002

The penultimate centralised meeting of the 2002 season was held at Oakington on September 29th (sharing the site with the speed flyers) and 9 teams turned out for the days racing. F2C Nationale was also due to be run but no teams were interested. Its strange to understand why there is so little interest when just 3 weeks previous to this event 17 teams flew F2C Nationale in Portugal - There were prizes offered for the event but still no interest !!

The weather was fine with a light breeze and temperatures around 20 degrees.

Racing got underway just after mid-day and Saw Ross/Turner post an early 3:14.4 to lead the way in what was an easy race with 2 slower teams. (Martin Paffett now flying with Mike North as Clive Sharp has decided to try his hand out in F2B Aerobatics). Barker/Tompkins recorded a 3:46.5.

The 2nd race saw Smith/Brown record a 3:34.0 with Langworth/Broadhead retiring at the first stop with a clipped prop and Hill/Metcalfe putting in a 3:44.1

The 3rd race saw Miles/Yeldham record a surprise 3:26.1 with Fitzgerald/Thomason finishing in 3:30.0 and Walker/Peart in 4:11.1. - Miles/Yeldham having a very clean race with first flick starts.

In the 2nd round it was only Ross/Turner who could break the 3:30 barrier with a 3:23.4 - Fitzgerald/Thomason putting in a 3:32.4 and no other teams affecting the positions with several retirements.

The 3rd round saw Ross/Turner turn in another quick one with a 3:20.0 and Miles/Yeldham breaking 3:30 again with a 3:29.4. Fitzgerald/Thomason then put in a 3:27.2 with Langworth/Broadhead recording a 3:31.3.

In the 4th round there were 3 teams electing not to fly leaving just 2 races. Ross/Turner recorded another sub 3:20 with 3:19.6, Fitzgerald/Thomason moved into 2nd spot with a 3:24.7 and Smith/Brown put in a 3:34.2.

The final was therefore between Ross/Turner, Fitzgerald/Thomason and Miles/Yeldham.

All three teams got away well at the start but it was clear that Ross/Turner had both a speed advantage and were doing better stops. At the halfway stage both F/T and M/Y had to make compression adjustments but were still rotating well. M/Y then made another adjustment and went up hicking and banging - losing all speed. Ross/Turner came home in 6:41.5, Fitzgerald/Thomason in 7:18.8 and Miles/Yeldham trailed home in 7:44.2. (Only one warning was given during the whole race)

Prizes of Hobby Goods were given at the end of a good days flying - helped by perfect weather.

CD was, as usual, Dave Rudd
